According to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), “Zero hunger (No hunger)” and “Good Health and Well-Being” target improved nutrition and ensure healthy lives.
Today, supplementary food or nutritional supplements are preparations intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients, and increased demand for low-cost supplementary foods in countries with developing economies is predictable.

Nutritional Supplements

A food supplement or nutritional supplement is a preparation intended to supplement the diet and provide nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids that may be missing or may not be consumed in sufficient quantities in a person’s diet. Some countries define dietary supplements as foods, while in others they are defined as drugs or natural health products.

Supplements containing vitamins or dietary minerals are included as a category of food in the Codex Alimentarius, a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations related to foods, food production and food safety. These texts are drawn up by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an organization that is sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

What are nutritional supplements?

Nutritional supplement is also called supplementary food or dietary supplement. Generally, dietary supplements are products intended to supplement the diet. Therefore, they are also referred to as food supplements. So, there is no significant difference between food supplement and dietary supplement. These types of supplements can be taken by mouth as a tablet, capsule, pill or a liquid. Their main function is to provide a specific nutrient through the diet along with food. Hence, food supplements/dietary supplements may contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids or amino acids. Most of the nutrients are essential for life.

How can we evaluate the quality of a supplement?

Health supplements are claimed to improve your health. Dietary supplements may, in some jurisdictions, be subject to regulation. We evaluate health supplements in the following ways:

  • The supplement is sold in major pharmacies, stores, legal platforms, etc. Sales on illegal platforms are not accepted.
  • The manufacturer of the supplement is certified to be qualified to produce supplements.
  • The supplement clearly indicates the ingredients and effects.
  • The supplement does not contain any ingredients that may harm the human body.
  • The supplement cannot claim to have medical effects to treat diseases.
  • The supplement claims that improving human nutrition does have an effect.

Use nutritional supplements correctly

People take supplements for several reasons. Some people take supplements when they think they are not eating properly. These people may benefit from a multivitamin or nutritional supplement if they are not able to get enough nutrients in their diet alone. It is important to remember that dietary supplements are not meant to prevent, treat, or cure diseases. They can be beneficial to your health when taken with your pharmacist or health provider’s guidance. In conclusion, supplements can be beneficial for some patients. Although they are easily purchased over-the-counter, there are some risks associated with their use. Always talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider before taking a supplement.
